34th Annual Horse Show (2004)
On Oct. 9 – 10, 2004, the Peekskill Rotary held its 34th
Annual Horse Show and Country Fair
This is the only show in Westchester County with both English and Western
classes. There were 21 Western classes with six championships and 28
English classes with eight championships.
This year, Kennis Fairfax judged the Western and English Divisions,
as well as the Therapeutic Riding Division.
Western Day was Saturday and English Day was Sunday. Stables from all
over the tri-state area participated in the show, which has a reputation
for quality. The show is non-rated so the entry fees are lower than many
other events. This allows beginners to gain competitive experience and
the opportunity for seasoned riders to compete in more classes. This
is one of the few horse shows that still offer Silver awards.
Over the years, the Peekskill Rotary has expanded the basic horse show
to include an old-fashioned country fair with home craft vendors, a flea
market, hayrides, pony rides, exhibitions and entertainment.
The “Kountry Kitchen” sells home-baked cakes, cookies,
brownies, pies, breads, jams, hot pretzels, pumpkins, apples, cider,
and mums. In the food tent, Rotarians serve up hamburgers, hot dogs,
chicken, their famous sausage & peppers, fries, cider and other beverages.
Rotarians also sell ice cream and popcorn.
There were activities for children, such as air rides and games of
skill, in addition to the traditional pony rides and hayrides. Children
from local dance, martial arts and gymnastic schools entertained show
guests.
For the Peekskill Rotary, the horse show is its primary fundraiser.
All money raised is donated back into the community and to international
relief efforts.
