Food-PATCH of Westchester Praises Peekskill Rotary

In the May 2005 issue of The Food Source, Michal Winter, agency relations coordinator of Food-PATCH of Westchester, reported on a Peekskill Rotary programs benefiting the local community. Food-PATCH provides food and support to member anti-hunger programs and agencies throughout Westchester County.

Ginny Goodale at Holy Spirit Food Pantry had some volunteers this month that traveled far and wide to help. At a recent visit to the Holy Spirit Food Pantry I was delighted to meet two visiting Rotarians from Korea. Ginny’s husband Pete, a Peekskill Rotarian, is helping to show "Toni" and "Sue" (their American names) different business practices in the United States. What better way to illustrate the American generosity and caring, than to show them how we assist those in need? (Peekskill Rotary this year supported this food program for local residents.)

Capt. Daniel Alverio at the Peekskill Salvation Army has some terrific young cooks for his soup kitchen. Capt. Alverio engages students from (Rotary) Interact Clubs at local high schools. On my visit in early April, I met the students from the Peekskill High School Interact Club. The students actually did the cooking in their high school home economics classroom and brought the food to the Salvation Army to serve for Saturday’s lunch. What a wonderful experience for these young people, not only the cooking, but it was great to see them interacting with the men and women at lunch, and treating them with the utmost respect. (Capt. Daniel Alverio is a Peekskill Rotarian. The Peekskill club encourages and supports Interact clubs for high school student at Peekskill and Hendrick Hudson High Schools.)
