The Rotary Club of Peekskill hosted its 36th Annual Horse Show and Country Fair Sept. 16 & 17, 2006 at the Blue Mt. Reservation in Peekskill. Admission and parking were free and the show went on despite some early rain on Saturday. Competition and attractions ran from 9:15 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, and 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.
This is the only show in Westchester County with both English and Western riding classes. There are 23 Western classes with six championships on Saturday, and 28 English classes with eight championships on Sunday. Riders from stables throughout the tri-state area participate in the show.
Fair attractions include pony and hay rides, a country fair and craft market, entertainment and rides for the kids, and a “Kountry Kitchen” offering home-baked goods, pumpkins, apples and mums. In the food tent, Rotarians serve up burgers, hot dogs, chicken, sausage and peppers, fries, beverages, ice cream and pretzels. Breakfast was available for early-arrivers.
New attractions this year included the highly-regarded Masonic Child ID Program offered by Courtlandt Masonic Lodge #34. The program provides parents with resources to aid in the safe recovery of a lost child. And a dunking booth will expand activities for teens.
Peekskill Rotary President Sibyl Canaan said, “We enjoy producing this show and are proud that it is recognized as one of the premier family events in our community. The Horse Show is our club’s main fundraiser, with all proceeds donated back into the community and to international relief efforts.”
Blue Mt. Reservation is located on Welcher Ave. off Route 9. The Peekskill Rotary Club was chartered 87 years ago and has about 75 members representing a cross-section of Peekskill and Cortlandt community leaders.
