Peekskill High School

The Peekskill High School Interact Club is celebrating ten years of service to the Peekskill community.

Members celebrated “Make A Difference Day” by hosting the 7th annual “Safe Halloween.”  Costumed members decorated the school’s hallways and elementary children were invited to trick or treat through the hallways, play Halloween games and make a holiday craft.  Over 250 children attended.

We took part in the National Read-aloud and Children’s Book Week by going to Aunt Bessie’s Day Care Center and Hillcrest Elementary School and read our favorite books to the children.  This year we also began volunteering with the PTO at Uriah Hill Elementary School.  Members took part in the Winter Snowball Dance, math night and the Junior Olympics.

On a monthly basis, members visit Drum Hill Senior Living.  We do arts and crafts projects such as candle making, floral wreaths and picture frames with the residents.  Members have the opportunity to socialize with the residents, and real bonds and friendships developed.  The 6th annual “Senior, Senior Prom” had a fifties theme.  Members decorated the atrium, took prom pictures and gave out favors while dancing to the sounds of Tony Bennett, Johnny Mathis and Elvis Presley.  It proved to be another memorable evening.

Members put their culinary skills to work on a monthly basis as they prepare an entire meal for the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen.  The meal of baked ziti, meatballs, sausage, tossed salad and brownies is then served on the first Saturday of the month.  During the holiday season, the club stands outside Wal-Mart and takes part in the annual Salvation Army Bell ringing.  This year, along with the US Postal Service, we took part in a food drive to benefit the Salvation Army Food pantry.

The club took part in two fundraisers: the annual bake sale for the Heifer Project and the daffodil sale for the American Cancer Society.  The club also goes to the New York State Veteran’s Home once a month to play BINGO with the residents.  We provide the food for the Honor Roll breakfasts, sorted clothes for the District’s Warm Clothing Drive, did landscaping at the Habitat for Humanity house in Peekskill and wrapped gifts and read stories at Barnes & Noble to benefit the Peekskill High School library.

This spring, along with K 104 radio, we took part in the Rallye for Hunger food drive.  We were able to fill the Rallye truck which was taken to the Holy Spirit Fran Boylan Food Pantry.

As this year comes to an end, we look forward to another ten years of service to our school and the Peekskill community.
